Prima ballerina Marion Tait took time out from her busy schedule as performer and rehearsal mistress of ‘The Nutcracker’ with the Birmingham Royal Ballet, soon to be staged at the Birmingham Hippodrome, to talk to the pupils of Tait College. Pupils put forward questions ranging from ‘Why did you become a ballerina’ to ‘What was your most embarrassing moment on stage?’
This was Marion’s second visit to Alderbrook as she opened the school’s Arts Centre, the Edge in September 2005, of which she is patron.
Marion chatted to the college for half an hour, sharing her experiences and offering advice to pupils about how to achieve their goals. Marion expressed a delight that the College is named after her, along with other prominent artists: Shakespeare, Moore, Hockney and Elgar. Miss Tait continues to offer her support to the school, Tait College in particular, and the staff and pupils are very grateful for her patronage.
We look forward to a developing partnership with Marion and the Birmingham Royal Ballet and we wish them every success with their forthcoming Christmas production of ‘The Nutcracker’.

Some Year 9 students are following a pilot course which offers an interesting mix of reasoning skills and broader thinking skills. The course encourages pupils to exercise a range of thinking processes. These skills have a broad range of applications and students should be able to benefit from these in their other subjects.
The skills that learners will develop include some of the following:
- Thinking skills in order to explore ideas and their connections.
- Enquiry skills enabling them to ask their own questions in relation to evidence and information.
- Problem solving skills enabling them to organise and analyse data so that conclusions can be drawn from it.
- The ability to question evidence for relevance, significance and credibility.
- Reasoning skills so that they can analyse arguments, evaluate reasoning and develop reasoned arguments of their own.

Students are encouraged to collect arts miles in their planners. These are collected from arts teachers by signature or stamp.
1 = attending a club or rehearsal
5 = taking part in a longer project or workshop
10 = for each performance
As students fill their planner pages, they can collect a bronze, silver or gold badge from Ms Read or Mrs Manghnani in the Performing Arts Department.
