Alderbrook
School - Joint Sixth Form Proposal
Alderbrook School and Tudor Grange School
are proposing to set up a joint sixth form
to help further the potential of their students.
Please find a brief overview of the proposal
below.
After taking their GCSEs, most pupils at Tudor
Grange and Alderbrook Schools go on to study
for A levels, the International Baccalaureate
or vocational qualifications.
In many cases pupils go on to take a degree
course at university. Whether or not they
go to university, pupils hope their continuing
education up to 18 will ultimately put them
on track for a successful and enjoyable
career, that will contribute to a happy
life.
Following changes to the school leaving
age, from 2013 all our current year 7 pupils
will continue their education up to 17/18
– all the more reason why they need
the widest possible range of options to
choose from.
To extend the post-16 options open to our
pupils, and in response to suggestions from
a number of parents over recent years, our
two schools have been considering the possibility
of setting up a jointly managed sixth form
on the campus we share in central Solihull.
The proposal is that the sixth form would
have 180 places for each academic year,
and that it would open in September 2010
– thus allowing our current year 10s
and pupils who come after them the option
to continue their education within the school
environment.
It has long been a hope of the Governors
of both schools that they become 11-18 schools
offering a wide range of post-16 provision.
Because of current Government policy and
developments locally we believe that the
time is right to make this change. We also
see the logic of a joint provision on the
campus which will draw on the strengths
and specialisms of both schools, offering
pupils the widest of opportunities. A joint
approach is also most likely to be successful
in terms of funding for a substantial new
building which we are planning at the centre
of the current site.
A short document such as this cannot begin
to answer all your questions and concerns.
Issues such as governance of the sixth form,
exact location of the building, other educational
institutions with whom to work in partnership
are amongst those which we are working on.
Please feel free to email or phone the schools
if you have any questions (click
here for contact options). There will
be more formal acts of consultation on both
the sixth form and governance procedures
once proposals are more advanced.
Many thanks for your continued support,
Chair of Alderbrook Governors & Chair
of Tudor Grange Governors
